Over the past few decades, Korean products and skincare trends have caught the fancy of many women across the world. One among them is ‘Double Cleansing’, the apparent backbone of Korean beauty routines.

Let’s have more details about this go-to beauty technique and know whether it is worth your time from a top Delhi-based dermatologist, Dr. Nivedita Dadu.

What is Double Cleansing?

Simply put, double cleansing means washing your face twice- first, with an oil-based cleanser and again with a water-based cleanser. This technique helps you to get rid of all oil-based impurities including makeup, sunscreen, sebum, and pollution along with day’s dirt, grime, and sweat. Thus, the right time for double cleansing as per the dermatologist is evening as it helps to revitalise dull and tired skin.

Why is Double Cleansing important?

Though many people don’t go for double cleansing, this Korean beauty technique is very beneficial for your skin. The reason is that you might have applied several products like sunscreen or makeup on your face since morning which need to be completely removed along with dust. If not cleaned properly, it may lead to the accumulation of impurities due to which you may have more pimples on your face. It may also lead to an increase in dull and pigmented cells besides causing allergies and irritation on your face.

Another benefit of double cleansing is that it provides a perfect and clean canvas for you to go ahead with your night-time skincare routine. In such a situation, whatever products you’ll apply to your skin, will penetrate better, benefiting your skin.

How to do Double Cleansing?

If you want to do double cleansing, here are three steps that you must follow as recommended by Dr. Nivedita Dadu.

  1. Start with an Oil-Based Cleanser - When you wash your face with an oil-based cleanser, it helps you to remove all the dust, pollution, impurities, makeup, and sunscreen present on your face. These cleansers clean your face by emulsifying all the products that you must have applied. Though they effectively remove the makeup and sunscreen from your face, they won’t be washed away. For that, you must go ahead with the next step.
  2. Use a Gentle Cleanser - Wash your face with a mild or gentle cleanser so that the face is properly cleaned.
  3. Go ahead with Night-time Skincare Routine - Once your face is properly cleaned, you can apply your night-time products to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

Should you Try Double Cleansing?

No matter, whether you have oily, dry, or any other skin type, double cleansing is beneficial for you. Most of you who have oily skin must be thinking about whether you should use an oil-based cleanser or not. The answer is yes.

According to Dr. Dadu, if you have oily skin, you must be using products like salicylic acid, Retinoids, or several others to work on your blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, and other skin problems. As all these products make your skin dry, in such a scenario if you use an oil-based cleanser once in a day, it will help to keep your face hydrated and your skin barrier will also repair. But still, if your skin is very oily then you can either use micellar water in step one or you can go ahead with the same face wash that you use for your oily skin in step two.

And in case, if your skin is dull and pigmented, you can try out a gentle glycolic acid-based face wash after washing your face with an oil-based cleanser.

Though this Korean double cleansing method is a fantastic way to enhance your skincare routine, just do it once in a day as otherwise it will strip your skin of natural oils and cause dryness, sensitivity, and irritation.
