Menstrual periods can often be uncomfortable, unclean, and unpleasant. Throughout these four to five days, numerous bodily changes occur, making pad rash the last thing we want to contend with. The pads we use contain chemicals that can potentially irritate the sensitive skin around the vaginal area and inner thighs. Factors like chafing and moisture further contribute to the development of pad rash.

At times, the rash can occur due to irritation from the materials used in the pad. Alternatively, the accumulation of bacteria can be facilitated by the combination of moisture and warmth.

The majority of rashes caused by sanitary pads are due to a condition known as contact dermatitis. This occurs when your skin comes into contact with an irritating substance present in the pad. In the case of the vulva, contact dermatitis is referred to as vulvitis.

To alleviate this issue, it is advisable to switch to a different brand of pads or opt for cotton pads. Scented pads should be avoided as they can also trigger skin allergies. Additionally, it is essential to ensure that your hands are clean when changing pads. Here are some home remedies that will help you get instant relief from the period rashes:

Apple Cider Vinegar

To alleviate itching induced by period rashes, apply a small amount of apple cider vinegar on the affected area using a cotton ball. Allow it to dry and repeat this process up to three times a day for better results.

Ice Compression

Ice can effectively alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. Simply grab a few ice cubes, wrap them in a clean cloth, and gently place the compress on the affected areas. The cooling sensation will numb the nerve endings, providing immediate relief and improving your comfort.

Coconut Oil

It is an excellent solution for pad rash due to its antibacterial properties and moisturising effects. To effectively treat the rash, first, cleanse the affected area with cold water before going to bed. Then, using a cotton ball, gently apply coconut oil to the affected area. Additionally, you can apply coconut oil after your morning bath for continued relief.

Baking Powder Remedy

To alleviate itching and redness, baking powder can be employed. Start by combining two tablespoons of baking powder with a cup of water. Thoroughly mix the solution and gently apply it to the affected area. Allow it to dry before rinsing off with cold water and then ensure to pat dry the treated area with a clean towel or soft cloth.

Olive Oil

Extra virgin olive oil is rich in potent antioxidants and possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. These beneficial qualities contribute to the healing and revitalization of damaged skin, effectively soothing it and reducing both redness and inflammation.

Aloe Vera

It possesses various properties, such as antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory, that can aid in soothing pad rash and preventing skin itching. These beneficial properties make aloe vera effective in treating skin rashes, alleviating dry and itchy skin, managing allergic reactions, and addressing contact dermatitis.

Neem Leaves

Neem leaf oil is a beneficial ingredient for hair and skin care, known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that provide relief from skin rashes.

To utilise its benefits, follow these steps:

Bring water to a boil in a container, then add approximately 20 neem leaves and allow them to steep for a while. Remove the container from heat and let the water cool down to room temperature. Once cooled, apply the water to the affected area for washing. Alternatively, you can add the neem-infused water to a bucket and use it for a refreshing shower.

Conclusion

There are several home remedies that can help alleviate itching caused by period rashes. Many of these remedies use common ingredients that are inexpensive and may already be in your pantry. It's important to note that commercial products with the same ingredients are often more expensive. However, it's essential to exercise caution when using plant-based remedies as they can have side effects. Furthermore, it's important to seek medical advice before applying any new substance to your rash.
