A stem cell transplant is also known as bone marrow transplant, is a life saving medical treatment which we can use when the body cannot produce healthy blood cells on its own. In this treatment old, damaged bone marrow can be replaced with healthy stem cell that can rebuild the blood forming system.

Patients who get Benefit from it

The most common group of patients who need blood cell are those who suffer from blood cancer. This type of cancer affects how the body produces and functions of blood cell which sometimes result in damaged bone marrow. Some blood cancer are:

Leukemia:

It is a blood cancer that starts in bone marrow which causes abnormal white blood cells. It results in a weak immune system, leads to infections, fatigue and bleeding.

Lymphoma:

It is a cancer of the lymphatic system which affects our immunity. It causes fever, weight loss, fatigue etc. Treatment includes chemotherapy, radiation or stem cell transplant.

Multiple Myeloma:

It is a cancer of plasma cells in bone marrow. It weakens our bone, causes anaemia and other infections. It can be cured by chemotherapy, targeted drugs, stem cell transplant.

2.Patients with bone marrow disorders:

Stem cell transplant can be useful when some people develop conditions where their bone marrow stops producing enough blood cells. Disorders include:

Aplastic anemia:

It is a rare, serious condition where the bone marrow fails to produce enough new blood cells (red, white, platelets), leading to fatigue, frequent infections, and easy bleeding/bruising.

Myelodysplastic Syndromes:

Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of disorders caused by blood cells that are poorly formed or don't work properly.

3. Patients with Genetic Blood Diseases:

There are certain blood diseases which are genetic or inherited .For many of these diseases, stem cell transplant can be helpful. These diseases includes:

Thalassemia Major:

It is a severe condition in which the body produces little or no hemoglobin and can lead to life threatening conditions like anaemia. A stem cell transplant can completely eliminate it from our body.

Sickle Cell Disease:

A sickle cell disease also known as sickle cell anaemia is a painful and chronic disease that damages organs and can reduce life expectancy. The only way to cure it is to go for a stem cell transplant.

4.Patients undergoing High Dose Cancer Treatments:

Many cancer patients go through chemotherapy or radiation. These therapies kill cancer but sometimes they can also damage bone marrow. In this situation a stem cell transplant can help patients recover quickly by replenishing their blood forming system.

These are some groups of patients going through various diseases which can be cured by getting a stem cell transplant which is helpful, effective and gives life long benefits to patients suffering and not able to live their life well.
