Sleep disorders refer to a range of conditions that impact a person's ability to consistently achieve restful sleep. While occasional sleep difficulties can be attributed to factors like stress and busy schedules, the presence of persistent and disruptive sleep-related problems that affect daily functioning may indicate the presence of a sleep disorder. People experiencing sleep disorders may struggle with falling asleep and experience excessive daytime fatigue, depending on the specific type of disorder. In certain cases, sleep disorders may be indicative of an underlying medical or mental health condition. In cases where sleep disorders are not linked to any underlying condition, the usual approach to treatment involves a blend of medical interventions and lifestyle modifications. It is crucial to seek prompt diagnosis and treatment if you suspect you have a sleep disorder. Untreated sleep disorders can lead to further health complications and negatively impact performance at work, strain relationships, and hinder daily activities. Different types of sleep disorders Insomnia Insomnia, also known as sleeplessness, refers to the persistent struggle to initiate or maintain sleep. This sleep disorder can be triggered by various factors, including jet lag, stress, anxiety, hormonal imbalances, or digestive issues. In some cases, it may even manifest as a symptom of an underlying condition. The repercussions of insomnia can be far-reaching, affecting both your physical and mental well-being. Some of the potential consequences include depression, difficulty concentrating, irritability, weight gain, and impaired performance at work or school. Certain demographics are more susceptible to insomnia, particularly older adults and women. It is worth noting that insomnia is typically categorised into three types: chronic, intermittent, and transient. Chronic insomnia persists regularly for at least one month, while intermittent insomnia occurs periodically. On the other hand, transient insomnia lasts only for a few nights at a time. Sleep Apnea It is a medical condition marked by interruptions in breathing while asleep. This condition is of great concern as it results in decreased oxygen intake by the body and can lead to frequent awakenings during the night. Sleep apnea can be categorised into two types:
- Obstructive sleep apnea - In this type, the airflow is hindered or restricted due to a narrow or obstructed airway space, causing breathing to momentarily cease.
- Central sleep apnea - This type occurs when there is a disruption in the communication between the brain and the muscles responsible for regulating breathing. As a result, breathing patterns are affected, leading to pauses in breathing during sleep.
- Sleepwalking - This parasomnia involves walking or performing complex actions while asleep. People experiencing sleepwalking may appear dazed and unaware of their surroundings.
- Sleep talking - Also known as somniloquy, sleep talking involves talking during sleep without conscious awareness. The content of the speech can range from simple sounds to full sentences.
- Groaning - Sleep-related groaning, or catathrenia, is characterised by long, moaning sounds during exhalation. These groans may be loud enough to disturb sleep partners, but the individual experiencing them is usually unaware.
- Nightmares - Nightmares are vivid and distressing dreams that often cause feelings of fear, anxiety, or terror. They can occur during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and may awaken the person from sleep.
- Bedwetting - Also known as sleep enuresis, bedwetting refers to involuntary urination during sleep, typically in children. It can be caused by various factors such as delayed bladder maturation or overproduction of urine during the night.
- Teeth grinding or jaw clenching - Medically referred to as bruxism, this parasomnia involves grinding, clenching, or gnashing of the teeth during sleep. It can result in dental problems, jaw pain, and disrupted sleep.
