The skincare industry evolves faster than any Tik Tok trend ever. Every few months a new skin care ingredient takes the centre stage. One ingredient you’ll notice popping up everywhere from skincare tutorials to dermatologist-recommended creams and serums is - Ceramide. What exactly is ceramide? Why is everyone obsessing over them? All these answers lie in your skin barrier.

A NEW SKIN BARRIER?

Let’s decode this mystery. Imagine your skin to be a brick wall. Now picture it like, the cells are the bricks here and the plaster that holds the wall in place is what actually ceramide does.
In simple terms, ceramides are the fatty molecules that are naturally found in your skin which act like a binding agent, keeping your skin cells in place. Collectively this layer helps in keeping the moisture in and the irritants out. When this layer is compromised, it can lead to dryness, redness, sensitivity and in many cases can result in severe skin diseases.
A New York based dermatologist, Dr.Shari Marchbein explains, “Ceramides are like the glue that hold the skin cells together and without enough of them the barrier becomes leaky causing sensitivity, dryness and even inflammation.”

BUT WHY CERAMIDES MATTER?

Scientifically speaking, the outermost layer of the skin known as the skin barrier is made up of skin cells which are held together by fats (lipids). Lipids are mainly made up of:
  • 50% Ceramides
  • 25% Cholesterol
  • 10-15% Fatty acids.
This composition clearly shows that ceramides are the most dominant and essential component of our skin.
But here's the bad news! Our natural ceramide levels decline with age, especially above 40. Research shows that women post menopause have decreased levels of ceramides, which explains the hyper-sensitivity of the skin, dryness and dullness. You might have heard about skin conditions such as Eczema and Psoriasis. Both these skin conditions are linked with reduced ceramide levels.
The British Journal of Dermatology conducted a study in 2019 which reported that eczema patients have up to 40% lower levels of ceramides in their skin as compared to normal people.

CLINICAL PROOF BEHIND THE OBSESSION!

A 2023 meta-analysis reviewing several trials concluded that the ceramide-based moisturizers were more effective in decreasing eczema severity scores (SCORAD) when compared to regular moisturizers.
Another research reveals that using a moisturizer which is enriched with ceramides twice daily for four weeks results in measurable improvements in trans epidermal water loss (TEWL), making the skin more porous.
Dermatologists also recommend using barrier creams infused with ceramides as a part of your daily care which will help in reducing itchiness, flare-ups and will result in softer and brighter skin.

DOES CERAMIDE BENEFIT EVERYONE?

Spoiler alert- Ceramides do benefit everyone. It does not matter if you are dealing with eczema, winter dryness or if you are in the process of healing from a retinol purge, ceramides are the solution for all.Ceramides are naturally skin-friendly making them gentle enough to be applied on sensitive or acne-prone skin. They simply renew what the skin has naturally lost.
It is highly recommended by the Dermatologists to use ceramide-based serums after cosmetic treatments like chemical peels or laser resurfacing. Ceramides are also considered as an addition to anti-aging routines. They are also good substitutes for actives like retinol as they do not cause any type of irritation.

SMART TIPS!

Skincare Tips for Ceramide Products

  1. Buy skincare products that contain ceramides alongside cholesterol and fatty acids.
  2. Never apply it directly to your skin. Instead, make sure to slightly wet your skin after mild cleansing to trap water and then apply the products.
  3. Be patient. Ceramides do not bring changes overnight. It is a slow process of barrier repair that only shows real results after constant use.
  4. Do not fall for marketing campaigns, and ditch other actives for ceramides. Think of ceramides as the base coat that makes Vitamin C and retinol easier to tolerate.
